The following is a summary of “Quality priorities related to the management of type 2 diabetes in primary care: results from the COMPAS + quality improvement collaborative,” published in the November 2024 issue of Primary Care by Gaid et al. 

Researchers conducted a retrospective study to describe the key quality improvement (QI) challenges identified by primary care teams in Quebec for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). 

They used a qualitative descriptive design to analyze the results of 8 COMPAS + workshops conducted across 4 regions in Quebec between 2016 and 2020. Deductive content analysis was applied to classify the reported quality improvement priorities under the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research domains and proposed change strategies under the Behavior Change Wheel intervention functions. 

The results showed that 177 participants attended the T2DM COMPAS + workshops, identifying three key quality improvement priorities: coordination and integration of care, preventive services for pre-diabetes and T2DM, and integration of the patients-as-partners approach. Proposed strategies were classified under education, training, persuasion, habilitation, and restructuring BCW intervention functions. 

They concluded that QI collaboratives played a key role in identifying priorities and strategies to enhance T2DM management in primary care.
