The following is a summary of “Thyroid Cancer Survivorship: Challenges and Opportunities,” published in the August 2024 issue of Endocrinology by Kotwal et al.

This narrative review aims to elucidate the challenges and opportunities encountered in the care of thyroid cancer survivors. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify full-text articles focusing on the quality of life and survivorship among individuals diagnosed with thyroid cancer, supplemented by the author’s clinical experiences. Despite the generally favorable prognosis associated with most thyroid cancer cases, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among survivors can be comparable to, or even worse than, that observed in patients with more aggressive malignancies. Factors contributing to diminished HRQOL include persistent concerns regarding cancer recurrence, long-term treatment-related effects, and the psychological burden of living with a cancer diagnosis. Additionally, disparities in healthcare access and financial challenges faced by thyroid cancer survivors further exacerbate HRQOL outcomes. 

Effective survivorship care necessitates not only vigilant monitoring for cancer recurrence and management of hypothyroidism but also a comprehensive assessment of the long-term sequelae associated with cancer treatment. This includes addressing surgical complications, the effects of radioactive iodine therapy, an increased albeit small risk of second primary malignancies, and aging-related health conditions, such as those affecting bone density, cardiovascular health, and fertility. To optimize survivorship outcomes, it is crucial to implement tailored care strategies that address these multifaceted issues. 

While survivorship care models may vary depending on the specific characteristics of the population served, a team-based, survivor-centered approach has been shown to provide the most effective care for thyroid cancer survivors. This model fosters collaboration among healthcare providers, empowers survivors through education, and promotes a holistic approach to health and well-being, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for individuals navigating life after thyroid cancer treatment. By acknowledging and addressing the unique challenges faced by this population, healthcare teams can better support thyroid cancer survivors in achieving optimal health outcomes and improving their overall quality of life.
