Vaccination rates for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV are low among nursing home residents early in the 2024-2025 respiratory virus season, according to research published in MMWR. Noting that nursing homes are required to report COVID-19 vaccination coverage and can opt to report influenza and RSV vaccination coverage, Hannah Reses, MPH, and colleagues examined COVID-19, influenza, and RSV vaccination coverage among nursing home residents early in the 2024-2025 COVID-19 season using data reported to the CDC. They found that 29.7% of nursing home residents had received a 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine as of November 10, 2024. Among residents at the facilities that elected to report influenza and RSV vaccination rates, 58.4% and 17.9% had received influenza and RSV vaccines, respectively. The researchers noted variations in vaccination coverage by HHS region, social vulnerability index level, and facility size. “Addressing low coverage of vaccination against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV [among nursing home residents] must be prioritized,” Reses and colleagues wrote.
