Many patients with a Meniere disease (MD) diagnosis based on ICD-10 do not meet American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) diagnostic criteria, according to a study published in The Laryngoscope. Michael Ruckenstein, MD, MSc, and colleagues examined the estimated prevalence of clinicodemographic MD features in patients diagnosed based on ICD-10. The researchers used chart review to estimate the prevalence of MD meeting AAO-HNS diagnostic criteria. In total, 480 of 806 MD diagnoses based on ICD-10 met diagnostic criteria (168 definite). Overall, 7.5% and 7.0% of patients reported a positive family history and had bilateral disease, respectively. The odds of reporting migraine were significantly higher among patients with MD, while the odds of reporting autoimmune conditions were significantly lower (ORs, 1.74 [95% CI, 1.26-2.42] and 0.45 [95% CI, 0.28-0.74], respectively) than comparators. After controlling for demographic characteristics, the odds of reporting allergies did not differ.
